I Spent Over Thirty Years Being the Person I Thought I Needed to Be to Be Loved

And I had no idea I had disappeared.

Then I found The Road Back to Me

If You Have Ever Wondered Why You Cannot Just Get Over It

You have read the books. You have sat in therapy and said the right things. You understand your childhood better than most people understand their own.

And still, when someone goes quiet on you, panic sets in. You ruminate over what you might have said to offend someone. The rumination takes you over, and before long you find yourself fawning and fixing the wrongdoing you think you caused, even though you're not quite sure you did anything wrong at all.

Dear One, that is not a failure of effort.

It is a survival adaptation shaped by childhood experiences that programmed and conditioned you to associate danger with displeasing others.

You're not broken.

I know, because I was there for a very long time.

Where I Started

I was born to two adult children of alcoholics.

Nobody drank in my house. At least not in front of me. That is what made it so confusing. There was no bottle to point at, no obvious wound to name. There was just a child who learned very early that her feelings  made the people she loved angry, cold, critical, and harder to reach, so she stopped having them out loud.

I became watchful. Hypervigilant. I could read a face across a kitchen and know what storm might be coming. I learned that love was something you earned by being useful, quiet, and easy, and that the moment you needed something, you had asked for too much.

I learned that asking for help implied I was weak, so I became super independent and strong. I learned that telling the truth banished you from the kingdom, so it was best to lie to yourself about what you saw and felt you knew.

I carried the consequences of my childhood  into adulthood the way we all do, without knowing I was carrying anything. I chased approval from people who could not give it. I over-functioned in relationships that mirrored exactly what I grew up in. I achieved things and felt nothing. And every time I collapsed, I was certain the problem was me. Some flaw I had been born with.

It took me years to understand that I was not broken. I was running a program

What Finally Changed Things

Insight did not heal me. It helped me name what I was feeling. Codependency. But I want to be honest about a critical fact here, because I think a lot of people are quietly ashamed that understanding has not been enough. So many clients ask me, "Lisa, I know I am codependent. I know that I avoid conflict, so why can't I just set boundaries if I know what's wrong?"

I understood my childhood for years before anything shifted. I could explain my patterns in detail while still living inside every one of them. And even when I promised myself I would not lose myself in another relationship, I did, more times than I would like to admit.

What changed was learning that these patterns do not live in the thinking mind. Research suggests the developing brain wires itself around whatever kept a child safest, and those pathways run beneath conscious awareness. That is why willpower fails.

You cannot out-argue something that was installed before you had language.

Below the veil of consciousness, an old operating system was running my life. Once I understood that, the work stopped being about trying harder and started being about working with what was actually there.

That is when everything changed. Not quickly. Not easily. But permanently.

The Life I Built On Purpose

Anthony walking into my life marks the beginning of the life I decided to create deliberately. We were married within two years of meeting. Between us we have six children, all of them now married, which in truth makes it feel like twelve. Our seventh grandchild arrives soon.

Our dog Alice has been my faithful friend for thirteen years. She is delighted to see me whether I have been gone a week or twenty minutes at the grocery store, which is its own kind of teaching.

I live a very simple life now. No drama. No chaos.

There are people I love whom I no longer speak to, and I miss them. Sometimes a healthy decision asks you to choose your mental health first, and the cost of that is real. I want to say that plainly, because nobody tells you that part.

But my inner child and I are home. Home inside this skin. Home inside this marriage. Home in the relationships with our children. Home in the work I get up at three in the morning to keep doing.

I am a healing adult child of emotionally immature parents who were themselves adult children, shaped by their own childhoods and never given the chance to recover from them. They did not know any better. That is why they hurt the people they loved.

And that is why my life is committed to this. To raising awareness of the invisible shackles that keep adult children tethered to the past, and to helping them believe that transformation is genuinely available to them, if they will make their inner child and their future self the priority.

Why I Built What I Built

The Above the Veil Method is the path I wish someone had handed me at the beginning.

Level One

12 Week Breakthrough Coaching Program

This is where you wake up.

You arrive living below the veil, running programming you have never named, abandoning yourself so automatically that it simply feels like being you.

Here you meet Amy, your amygdala, the part of you that sounds the alarm long before your thinking mind catches up. You meet Harry, your hippocampus, the part that keeps writing your past into your present. You learn why they behave the way they do, and you begin to reparent the child who needed a consistent, nurturing caregiver to help them regulate their emotional states.

One of the key understandings in Level 1 is that the nervous system must learn to feel safe before any long-lasting transformation can take place. Here you are creating inner safety. You leave this level knowing what has been running you, and how to react in healthier ways to what is happening inside and outside of you.

Level Two

Master Your Reality 8 Week Master Class

Awareness alone will not change your life. If it did, you would already be free.

This is where your CEO comes online: the prefrontal cortex, the part of you capable of choosing rather than reacting. I teach you how your brain operates in response to internal and external stressors and arm you with insights, practices, tools, and resources that build faith in your ability to more masterfully manage your emotions.

You learn how the predictive brain forecasts your future from your past, and how to direct it deliberately instead of being directed by it.

Research suggests the mind builds its world through programmed expectations from what it has already lived, which is why the same patterns keep arriving looking like fate. This is why so many adult children feel stuck. This Level helps you create forward-moving momentum. No fluff-just science.

It has to come second. You cannot consciously create from a dysregulated system still running survival code. You would only recreate the programming of the past!

Level Three

Soul School

A Course in the Quantum Science of Love Consciousness

This is where you learn to gently release the identity you built in order to survive.

The achiever. The helper. The people pleaser. The one who lived in fear of abandonment. The one who is easy to be around. None of them were you. They were strategies.

Here you step out of the doing, out of the earning and the proving, and into something quieter that does not ask you to perform in order to be worth loving. Here, your faith rapidly increases in your ability to choose love over fear.  Here, you return home, you make the full circle, and arrive at the doorway of your soul, fully complete.

It has to come last. You cannot release a self you have not yet reclaimed. Level One gives you back a self. Level Two teaches you to run it. Level Three loosens your grip on it.

Alongside the arc

The Breakthrough Warrior Membership

The membership is not a fourth level. It is the companion that walks beside all three.

Some people begin here, because a full program feels like too much to commit to when you are still working out whether any of this is you. Others stay long after they have finished a course, because the gap between knowing something and living it does not close in twelve weeks. It closes through repetition, and through other people who understand without needing it explained. This membership exists because momentum and repetition are required neurologically and emotionally when true transformation is your goal.

This membership library and community have been growing since 2017. It is the toolbox I wish I had when I was awakening, wobbling, and aching for tools that could steady my mind, ease my worries, and arm me with practice tools I could use immediately to help prevent me from feeling dragged into rabbit holes.

This feels like home for the adult child, who has always guessed at what normal was. Together, we learn and master life skills we were too busy surviving to learn.

Neuroscience-informed and forged through decades of lived experience, this isn't a magical cure; it is a roadmap for lasting self-mastery.

It gives adult children the structural tools to operate through metacognition: to observe what is running them from below the veil, and to challenge the subconscious script as it arrives in the conscious mind. From there, reactions can be rewritten deliberately, by building new expectations on purpose.

When the "playbook of life" was being handed out, adult children were too busy surviving to read it. As adults, we simply need to learn the emotional skills we were never taught, and the beauty of the human brain is that it is never too late to learn them.

The Credentials, For What They Are Worth

I am a certified life coach, a meditation teacher, and a bestselling author. The Road Back to Me reached number one in its category, and my books have been named among the best ever written on codependency. I have written for Psychology Today on narcissistic parenting and for The Good Men Project on finding the courage to break free from codependency. My podcast, Breakdown to Breakthroughs, and my YouTube channel reach and serve people from all over the globe. Over 50,000 people have taken my codependency quiz.

None of that is why I can help you.

I can help you because I sat where you are sitting for longer than I’d like to admit, convinced I was the problem, and that if I could just figure out how to please everyone, my life would finally work.

Dear One, whatever trouble codependency, lack of boundaries, rumination, and self-abandonment have gotten you into, trust me, I get it!

I have been there, and I just want to help you regain your conscious power!

Who I Work With

Adult children. People raised by alcoholics, narcissistic parents, or emotionally immature caregivers who were physically present but missed the mark on how to attune to their child's needs with consistent, predictable, maternal warmth.

The cycle-breakers. The underdogs. The Scapegoats in toxic family systems. The ones who feel what previous generations could not, who grieve what was never acknowledged, and who decide the pattern stops here.

It is the honor of my life to do this work with them.
Because they are the wounded healers who are changing the world by changing themselves.

Adult children are fierce because they choose to heal the wounds they did not cause.

Yes, it's a freaking honor to walk beside them on their inner transformation journey, cheering them on one breakthrough moment at a time.

Where To Begin

If you are not sure whether any of this is you, start with the free codependency quiz. It takes a few minutes, and it will give you language for something you have been experiencing that you didn't know had a name.

If you already know, Level One, The 12 Week Breakthrough Coaching Program is where this work begins.

Dear One, you are enough. You always were. The programming just never let you feel it.

It's not you. It's your programming. And programming can always be rewritten.
