BREAK THE CYCLE OF SELF-ABANDONMENT
You didn't learn to people-please.
You learned to survive.
There's a difference. And that difference changes everything.
Lisa A. Romano — Bestselling Author & Creator of the Above the Veil Method
If you carry hidden guilt, walk on eggshells, or feel responsible for everyone else’s happiness, you aren’t broken. The Above the Veil Method™ is a neuroscience-informed, three-level framework built to rewrite the childhood survival programming behind people-pleasing, anxiety, and never feeling good enough.
This is not therapy. It is not positive thinking. It is not another book about understanding your patterns.
It is subconscious reprogramming — structured, sequential, and built to reach the level where the wounds actually live.
It's not you. It's your programming. And programming can always be rewritten.

You’re Not Broken — Your Subconscious Just Learned You Weren't Enough
Seeking approval, people-pleasing, over-giving, and walking on eggshells are not character flaws. They are learned survival responses formed in childhood when love felt uncertain, conditional, or unsafe.
Your nervous system did exactly what it was designed to do—it kept you safe.
The exhaustion you feel isn't weakness; it's what happens when your body has been running on high alert for years. You are tired because carrying everyone else’s peace while losing your own takes everything you have.
It ends when we choose to stop abandoning ourselves to keep the peace for everyone else.
You did not choose these patterns. They were installed in the dark, before you had the words to question them—but what was installed in the dark can be rewritten in the light.
Healing doesn't happen by fighting yourself. It happens the moment you finally name the program for what it is, allowing the inner child within you to feel seen, safe, and ready to trust.
Meet Lisa A. Romano
I was not born knowing how to heal. I learned the hard way.
As an adult child of two adult children of alcoholics, I spent decades feeling invisible, walking on eggshells, and losing myself in relationships that mirrored the emotional chaos of my childhood. For a long time I believed the pain was a personal flaw. Something wrong with me. Something I needed to fix, hide, or push through.
It was not a flaw. It was a subconscious survival pattern running on autopilot, and the day I understood that, everything changed.
That understanding became the foundation of the Above the Veil Method. Built from my own healing, refined through over a decade of coaching work, and recommended by clinicians including Robin Bryman, PhD, and Alyse A. Rynor, LCSW, it is the framework I wish had existed when I needed it most.
Today I am the author of eight books, including multiple bestsellers on codependency recovery. My YouTube community has grown to over 726,000 people. I have had the privilege of guiding adult children across the world through the work of coming home to themselves.
It is an honor I do not take lightly.
Adult children are the cycle-breakers. They are the ones who feel what previous generations could not, grieve what was never acknowledged, and choose healing so the past no longer defines the future.
Dear One, if you are here, you are already one of them.
Signs You've Been Abandoning Yourself to Survive
Most people who find their way here do not think of themselves as codependent.
They just feel exhausted. Powerless. Quietly bewildered by why life feels so heavy no matter how hard they try. They do not recognize that the invisible weight they are carrying has a source, or that it has a name.
And they do not see that they are self-abandoning because focusing on others at the expense of the self was exactly how they survived. It was not a weakness. It was the most intelligent thing a child could do in an unsafe environment. The problem is that survival strategy followed them into adulthood, and now it is costing them everything.
If you had to shrink as a child to avoid criticism, rejection, or emotional chaos, your nervous system learned a set of rules for staying safe. Those rules did not disappear when you grew up. They followed you into your relationships, your finances, your self-worth, and the quiet moments when you wonder why you still feel like you are not enough.
Dear One, what has a name can finally be healed.
Here are the signs that childhood survival programming may still be running your life:
-
Shrinking until you disappear: You find yourself toning down your opinions, biting your tongue, and folding your entire personality away just to keep the peace. You lose yourself so easily in others that enmeshment starts to feel like love—robbing you of your voice, your boundaries, and your individuality without you even realizing you were vanishing.
-
Abandoning yourself at the first sign of friction: The moment someone's tone shifts or disapproval flashes across their face, your body panics. You immediately override your own truth, fold like a house of cards, and say "it's fine" when it is destroying you inside—all to keep the peace at your expense.
-
Living trapped in your own head: You replay conversations for hours, agonizing over whether you said the wrong thing or disappointed someone. You walk into a room and instantly scan everyone’s face and tone to measure their mood. Your brain is trapped in a 24/7 hyper-vigilant loop, desperately trying to solve a panic you can't even logic your way out of.
-
Chronic self-doubt: Before you make almost any decision, you run it through an invisible filter: What will they think? Will they be mad? Will I cause a problem? Slowly, your own wants, needs, and desires fade into the background until you don't even know what you want anymore. This isn't just indecision—it is self-abandonment, and it is how an old survival program quietly runs your entire life.
-
Believing love must be earned: Somewhere in the background, quietly running everything, is the crushing belief that you are simply not good enough as you are. So you settle for less than you deserve, overgive, overfunction, and burn yourself out trying to anticipate everyone's needs before your own. And here is the hardest part: you have no idea this is what you're doing. Self-abandonment feels normal. It just feels like being you.
- Attracting narcissistic or avoidant partners: if you were raised to believe your role is to manage others' emotions through self-sacrifice and self-abandonment, you and the narcissist fit together like a lock and key. You are other-oriented; they are self-oriented. You were trained to give; they were trained to take. Neither of you chose this consciously. It is a dance of two subconscious minds, each playing out childhood programming, and the music keeps playing until one of you awakens. Dear One, let it be you.
One Path. Three Levels. Real Change.
THE ABOVE THE VEIL METHOD
One Path. Three Levels. Built in the Only Order That Works.
Most programs give you information. The Above the Veil Method gives you a sequence.
That distinction matters more than it might sound. You can understand your patterns completely, read every book, follow every podcast, spend years in therapy, and still watch yourself repeat them on a Tuesday afternoon. That is not a failure of effort or intelligence. It is what happens when the work stays at the level of the conscious mind while the programming runs three floors below it.
The Above the Veil Method works at the level where the programming actually lives. And it does so in a specific order, because the order is not a design choice. It is a neurological necessity.
You cannot reprogram what you cannot yet see.
You cannot consciously create from a system still running survival code.
You cannot release a self you have not yet reclaimed.
Each level exists because the one before it makes it possible.
Level One
The 12 Week Breakthrough Coaching Program
In this 12-week program, we stop guessing why life feels so heavy and start untangling the root causes. You’ll learn how to step out of living from the subconscious autopilot state, recognize when you're abandoning yourself, and heal the core wound of "not being enough."
It is a practical, compassionate roadmap that takes you out of survival mode and gives the tools you never learned because you were too busy surviving.
Level Two
The 8 Week Master Your Reality Master Class
In this 8-week class, we stop managing symptoms and start operating the machinery.
You will learn how emotion actually works in the brain, how your predictive mind builds tomorrow out of yesterday, and how to bring your CEO online so you are choosing rather than reacting.
It has to come second. You cannot consciously create from a system still running survival code, and now yours is not.
Level Three
The 10 Week Soul School - A course in the Quantum Science of Love Consciousness
In this 10-week course, we stop building the self and start setting it down. The achiever. The helper. The one who is easy to be around. You will learn to release the identity you constructed to survive and step out of earning and proving, learning to identify with your soul self rather than your ego self.
It has to come last. You cannot release a wounded self you have not yet reclaimed, and by now you have.
Alongside Every Level-
The Breakthrough Warrior Membership
Not a fourth level. A place to begin if a full program feels like too much right now, and a place to stay once you have finished one. Knowing a pattern and no longer falling into it are different things, and the distance between them is closed by repetition, structure, and people who speak your language.
Live group coaching every month, plus two years of recorded calls, courses, worksheets, and metacognitive tools. A place for Adult Children to feel seen, heard, never judged, understood and supported.
Learn MoreWHAT MAKES THIS WORK DIFFERENT
These are not courses you watch and forget. They are a structured reprogramming system, and every element is built the way it is for a specific neurological reason.
What You Actually Do
Each week you receive one essential teaching — one idea, delivered at the pace a healing nervous system can actually absorb. Not a firehose. Not a weekend intensive that fades by Wednesday. One idea, practiced across a full week, returned to again and again until it becomes part of how you move through the world.
The repetition is not a coincidence. It is the mechanism.
Research suggests the brain learns best through structured, repeated exposure over time, not through single events, however powerful. The same neurological process that installed your survival programming in childhood, through consistent repetition of the same emotional experiences, is the process we are deliberately hijacking here. Your brain already knows how to unlearn and relearn. It does it naturally. The Above the Veil Method gives it the right conditions, the right sequence, and the right repetition to do exactly that, this time in the direction you choose.
This is why one essential teaching per week matters. This is why the homework exists. This is why the method is built across weeks and levels rather than delivered in a single sitting. The structure is not a convenience. It is the strategy.
You meditate in theta brainwave states, that drowsy, receptive place between waking and sleep. Research suggests the subconscious mind becomes more open to new patterning in these states. This is where we speak directly to the child rather than lecturing the adult.
You journal with neuroscience-informed prompts designed to activate your prefrontal cortex, what I call the CEO. Not diary pages. Structured questions that build the skill of observing your own thinking rather than being carried along by it. That skill has a name: metacognition. It is the difference between having a thought and noticing you are having one.
And each week you are given experiential homework, specific, detailed, and deliberately designed to be achievable. That is not accidental. Small, attainable goals do something that insight alone never can: they prove to your brain and your nervous system that you are capable of setting an intention, honoring it, and following it through. Every time you do, you build new evidence of your own trustworthiness to yourself.
The homework moves through practices you will return to again and again. Inner child connection exercises that help you meet the part of you that learned to disappear. The mirror exercise, which rebuilds the relationship with the self that self-abandonment eroded. The 1-2-3 process for moving through emotional charge without suppressing or performing. And destiny goal setting, because once the nervous system begins to feel safe, you need a conscious practice for choosing the life you actually want rather than simply reacting to the one you inherited.
None of these practices require other people to go well. They require only you, showing up for yourself, perhaps for the first time.
Why the Order Is Non-Negotiable
Your brain is a prediction machine. It builds your future out of your past. We are not here to dismantle those predictions, because every one of them kept you safe once, and a system that feels its defenses being torn away will only grip them harder.
So we honor what they were for. Then we update them with new evidence, slowly enough that nothing flinches.
That is why Level One must come first. That is why Level Three must come last. Safety before reprogramming. Reclamation before release.
Why Clinicians Recommend It
This work is neuroscience-informed, shaped by decades of lived experience, and recommended by Robin Bryman, PhD, and Alyse A. Rynor, LCSW, clinicians who understand that insight alone has a ceiling, and that real change requires reaching below it.

Psychologist Approved
Recovering from the trauma of narcissistic abuse is challenging and often requires a multilevel treatment plan. It involves understanding narcissistic personality disorder and the target of the narcissist, who lacks a sense of self and conscious awareness. In my experience, psychological therapy can help to an extent, but Lisa A. Romano's 12-Week Program takes it to a higher, essential level. Many of my patients over the years have taken Lisa's 12 Week Breakthrough Program and have flourished in their ability to be consciously aware, emotionally mature, more grounded in themselves, and they exhibit higher self-confidence. I highly recommend this program to anyone who struggles with codependency and the inability to advocate for themselves as an adult. Lisa is truly a life-saver.

From Survival Mode to Living Above the Veil
These are adult children who spent years reading a room before they read themselves. Some were where you are right now. Unsure, confused, certain they were not enough.
It was never them. It was their programming.

I enrolled in Lisa’s 12-week program right away, and I’m sure glad I did. The course provided a pathway to objectively explore my childhood, my parents, and how what happened to me created a dysfunctional program in my brain: a codependent adult with a handful of narcissistic traits. Taking this course provided the explanations, resources, and tools for me to truly start overcoming codependency and all of my childhood trauma. I know the work to be my true self will never end, it’s a lifelong journey, and I’m grateful that Lisa’s program got me on the path with such efficiency!

I have been on this journey for several years now but could never put the pieces of the puzzle together. I was always looking outward for the answers. The 12 Week Breakthrough Program showed me the path to understanding my inner child, my subconscious programming, my codependency, and that this was where everything originated from. The program also gave me the tools to fix myself and my faulty programming in order to live a more authentic and fulfilling life. I want to thank Lisa A. Romano and her staff. This program has truly transformed my Life.
